Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Stimulation, 30 Minutes
Also known as: CORTISOL30
Use
This test is used to screen, diagnose, and monitor diseases associated with excess or deficient cortisol production. It is particularly useful in assessing adrenal insufficiency and differentiating primary from secondary adrenal insufficiency. The test measures the peak serum cortisol level at specific intervals after the administration of cosyntropin, which stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol.
Special Instructions
To ensure accurate results, the specimen must be labeled with the time drawn, clotted completely at room temperature, and separated from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Proper labeling and processing are crucial for reliable results.
Limitations
The test's interpretation is dependent on properly timed sample collection. Patients with exogenous steroid use or certain medications may influence cortisol levels, potentially affecting test results. The test is not diagnostic of specific adrenal diseases, and abnormal results should be followed up with additional testing as clinically indicated.
