Allergen, Weed, False Ragweed
Also known as: FRAG
Use
This test measures the level of allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) to False Ragweed to aid in the diagnosis of allergic reactions. A quantifiable increase in allergen-specific IgE can indicate sensitization to the allergen, though it may not directly correlate with clinical symptoms due to variability in individual response. The test results, ranging in concentration from less than 0.10 kU/L to greater than 100.00 kU/L, can aid allergy specialists in assessing the likelihood of an IgE-mediated allergic reaction.
Special Instructions
Avoid multiple patient encounters as they can affect test results. Separation of serum from cells should occur as soon as possible, ideally within two hours of collection. Use the ARUP Standard Transport Tube for specimen transfer.
Limitations
The presence of allergen-specific IgE does not always correlate with the severity of clinical symptoms upon exposure to allergens. Results in the low range (0.10-0.34 kU/L) are of undetermined clinical relevance. Negative results do not rule out the possibility of allergies or anaphylaxis, as some patients may still react despite low IgE levels. Therefore, correlation with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens is essential for proper interpretation.
