Arbovirus Antibodies, IgG and IgM, CSF
Also known as: ARBOCSF GM
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of infections caused by arboviruses in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It detects antibodies (IgG and IgM) against several arboviruses such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, Western Equine Encephalitis virus, and others. The presence of specific IgM antibodies indicates a current or recent infection, while IgG antibodies can suggest past or current infection. However, cross-reactivity with other related viruses in the Flaviviridae and Alphavirus families must be considered, and corresponding serologic tests may be needed for confirmation.
Special Instructions
This test is not approved for use in New York; specimens from New York clients will be sent to a New York state-approved laboratory. It's critical to note that blood contamination can affect results, leading to false positives or negatives. For accurate interpretation, antibody testing of the corresponding serum is highly recommended.
Limitations
The test is not FDA-approved. Cross-reactivity is a significant constraint, especially with related arboviruses like St. Louis encephalitis virus and members of the Alphavirus family. Additionally, the presence of antibodies in CSF may result from blood contamination or serum antibodies crossing the blood-brain barrier, leading to potential false results. It is also not to be used solely for quantitative purposes without clinical correlation.
