Autoimmune Encephalopathy/Dementia Panel, CSF
Also known as: AIENCDEMC
Use
This test is used to evaluate new acute-to subacute-onset encephalopathy, dementia, or cognitive impairment. It includes detecting antibodies that may occur in autoimmune neurological diseases, helping to discriminate between chronic paraneoplastic neurological disorders and other inflammatory disorders of the nervous system. It is crucial for diagnosing autoimmune and paraneoplastic encephalitis such as limbic or diencephalic encephalitis, where antibody levels serve as important markers for diagnosis and tracking therapeutic response.
Special Instructions
If new-onset epilepsy is the prominent feature, refer to Autoimmune Epilepsy Panel, CSF (3006205). If new-onset movement disorder is the prominent feature, refer to Autoimmune Movement Disorder Panel, CSF (3018966). For testing in individuals under 18 years of age, refer to Autoimmune Pediatric CNS Disorders, CSF (3006211). Testing in both serum and CSF is recommended to maximize diagnostic yield.
Limitations
A negative test result does not rule out a diagnosis of autoimmune neurological diseases. Results should be interpreted in context with patient's clinical history and other laboratory findings. The full spectrum of clinical disorders and tumors associated with detected antibodies continues to be defined and should involve clinical correlation.
