Blood Culture, Fungal
Also known as: MC BFUNG
Use
The Blood Culture, Fungal test is a gold standard diagnostic tool used to identify fungi as an infectious agent in blood. It assists clinicians in diagnosing fungal infections and determining the appropriate course of treatment. Fungal bloodstream infections can be life-threatening, and timely detection is crucial for effective management. This test provides insights into the fungal pathogen's presence, enabling tailored antifungal therapy to improve patient outcomes.
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected using aseptic procedures to avoid contamination. Transport of the collected specimens should be done at room temperature as specified. Identification and susceptibility testing on positive cultures carry additional charges.
Limitations
The test is restricted to detecting fungi present in the bloodstream and may not detect fungal infections located at other body sites. Negative results do not conclusively rule out the presence of fungal pathogens, especially if the fungal burden is low or intermittent. Additionally, the test has a variable turnaround time, with negative cultures finalized at 43 days and positive results reported as soon as detected, which may delay diagnosis and treatment in acute scenarios.
