Bordetella pertussis Antibodies, IgA and IgG by ELISA with Reflex to Immunoblot
Also known as: BORDPAN2
Use
This test is recommended for assessing late-stage pertussis (>4 weeks) to determine immune response via IgA and IgG antibodies against Bordetella pertussis. It is specifically designed for situations where serology is used to aid diagnosis of pertussis infection in the late stage, as PCR and culture may not be as effective. If elevated levels of IgA or IgG antibodies are detected, it may suggest a current or past exposure to the organism or immunization.
Special Instructions
To ensure the accuracy of results, it is important that parallel testing be conducted. Convalescent specimens should be submitted within 30 days from the acute specimen collection to facilitate accurate interpretation. Specimens must be clearly labeled as 'acute' or 'convalescent.' For New York state clients, the IgM component of this test is not available, and specimens will be sent to a New York-approved laboratory.
Limitations
While this test is effective for assessing antibodies in the later stages of potential exposure to Bordetella pertussis, it is not FDA approved and performance characteristics have not been established by them. Notably, bacterially contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, icteric, lipemic, or turbid specimens are conditions that may lead to sample rejection. Repeat freeze/thaw cycles could negatively impact the integrity of frozen specimens as well.
