C Antigen Typing - Patient
Also known as: C AG
Use
The C Antigen Typing test is used to determine if the C (RH2) antigen is expressed on the patient's red blood cells. This information is vital in the context of blood transfusions and pregnancies, as the presence or absence of this antigen can affect compatibility and potential for alloimmunization. The test results can guide further testing, such as determining the zygosity of the patient for the C antigen.
Special Instructions
It is recommended to also order the 'Little c Antigen Typing - Patient' (2007939) to determine if the patient is heterozygous or homozygous for the C antigen. Ensure the blood sample is collected in a Lavender (K2EDTA) or Pink (K2EDTA) tube and transported refrigerated.
Limitations
The test is designed to detect the presence or absence of the C (RH2) antigen but does not quantify the level of antigen present. It also does not determine other Rh antigens or other blood group systems. Incorrect handling, such as freezing the sample, may affect test results.
