ABO Grouping and Rho(D) Typing
Also known as: Blood Grouping and Rh Typing, Blood Type, Group and Type, Type and Rh
Use
Determination of ABO blood group and Rh type for transfusion candidates. Group and typing of expectant mothers and newborns may indicate potential for ABO hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn. Rh typing is used to determine Rh immune globulin candidacy for prenatal and postpartum patients.
Special Instructions
If ordering a complete blood count (CBC) or an antibody screening test in conjunction with this test, it is necessary to submit a separate 4 mL specimen for each.
Limitations
Certain conditions may interfere with the interpretation of this test. These include abnormal plasma proteins, cold autoagglutinins, a positive direct antiglobulin test, and bacteremia. Additionally, partial antigens, which are rare variants of the D antigen, may result in variable testing outcomes.
