ABO Group
Use
Determines patient’s ABO blood group (A, B, AB, or O) to assist with transfusion compatibility, organ transplant matching, prenatal assessments, and other clinical contexts where blood group typing is essential.
Special Instructions
Orderable separately under Test Code 785; often co-ordered with Rh Type (Test Code 792) or as part of the combined ABO and Rh panel (Test Code 7788). If collected with other tests requiring EDTA (e.g., CBC or HbA1c), a separate EDTA tube is required.
Limitations
Typically provides blood group classification but does not detect less common or rare blood group variants beyond the ABO system. Does not provide antigen subtyping or weak subgroup detection.
