Cortisol, Free by Equilibrium Dialysis/LC-MS/MS
Also known as: FCORTS TMS
Use
The Cortisol, Free by Equilibrium Dialysis/LC-MS/MS test is used to screen, diagnose, and monitor diseases associated with either excess or deficient cortisol production. This can include conditions such as adrenal insufficiency or Cushing's syndrome. The test measures the free cortisol levels which are not bound to proteins in the blood, providing a more accurate indication of the biologically active portion of cortisol in the body. It is typically recommended that samples be collected at specific times of the day to align with the natural circadian rhythm of cortisol.
Special Instructions
Recommended collection times are either between 8-10 a.m. or between 4-6 p.m. These times align with natural cortisol levels in the body. It is important to indicate the time of draw on the test request form and specimen tube to ensure accurate interpretation of results.
Limitations
This test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA and is performed as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT) in a CLIA-certified laboratory. Performance characteristics were established by ARUP Laboratories. Results could be influenced by factors such as improper specimen handling — for example, hemolyzed, icteric, lipemic, or heparinized specimens are unacceptable.
