Cryptosporidium and Coccidia Exam, Fecal
Also known as: PARAST
Use
This test is intended for the detection of parasites such as Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Cystoisospora in individuals suffering from persistent diarrhea lasting more than 14 days or in individuals with known risk factors. It is commonly used when Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, or Cystoisospora is a suspected infectious agent. The test uses a modified acid-fast stain to identify these parasites in fecal specimens, assisting in the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea caused by these pathogens.
Special Instructions
Due to the various shedding cycles of many parasites, it is recommended to test three separate stool specimens collected over a 5-7 day period. Cryptosporidium antigen detection by EIA and Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) for Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora are also available as additional testing options.
Limitations
A single negative result does not rule out the possibility of a parasitic infection due to the intermittent shedding of parasites. Therefore, multiple stool samples collected over several days are advisable for accurate results. The test cannot be performed on specimens other than stool or unpreserved stool, and frozen specimens are unacceptable.
