Cytology, Pap Smear
Also known as: GG REQUEST
Use
The Cytology, Pap Smear test is used for screening and detection of cervical cancer. It evaluates the lower female genital tract to detect inflammatory/infectious or benign proliferative conditions, as well as to detect unsuspected or confirm suspected atypical, premalignant, or malignant changes. This test is also used for follow-up of patients with known and/or treated premalignant or malignant lesions.
Special Instructions
A conventional pap smear is primarily used as a screening test for cervical cancer. Ensure slides are unstained and transported in slide holders at room temperature. Unlabeled slides will not be accepted. Please refer to Specimen Collection and Handling for specific instructions.
Limitations
The Pap test is a screening tool with an inherent false-negative rate. The interpretation of Pap smear results should be done with caution regarding its limitations for detecting certain types of lesions or malignancies.
