Free Thyroxine Index Panel
Also known as: FTIP
Use
The Free Thyroxine Index Panel is used to determine the level of free thyroxine in the blood, which is a crucial thyroid hormone affecting metabolism and overall health. This test is not recommended for routine thyroid disorder screening; instead, the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone test is suggested for initial screening. It includes measurements of Thyroxine, Total (T4) and T Uptake to provide a calculated Free Thyroxine Index, helping in the assessment of thyroid function.
Special Instructions
The test is not recommended for routine thyroid disorder screening. It is advised to use the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone test for initial screening of thyroid conditions, with Thyroxine, Free (Free T4) serving as the preferred alternative for the T Uptake and Free Thyroxine Index tests.
Limitations
The test may not provide a comprehensive evaluation for thyroid disorder and should not be used as a standalone test for diagnosis. It is important to consider alternative tests that may provide a more direct measurement of thyroid function, such as the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone test. Also, grossly hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable for testing.
