Fungal Culture
Also known as: MC FUNG
Use
The Fungal Culture test is designed to culture pathogenic fungi from any direct specimen excluding blood or bone marrow. It is an essential diagnostic tool for detecting fungal infections in various non-hematological body specimens. This test can help identify the presence of fungi, which can then be further characterized if necessary to guide treatment options. Detecting fungal pathogens early aids in managing infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients.
Special Instructions
This test is not the preferred method for screening Candida auris colonization in skin specimens. To screen for C. auris on skin, use the Candida Auris by PCR test. If a culture isolate is needed for public health or susceptibility testing, reference the Candida Auris Surveillance Culture. Special media must be requested if Malassezia furfur is suspected.
Limitations
This test is not suitable for blood or bone marrow specimens. Ground tissue specimens may have decreased sensitivity for some fungi, including Mucorales species. Volumes less than 1 mL may compromise the recovery of fungi and will result in a suboptimal disclaimer. Interpretation is limited in certain nonsterile specimens, and identification of fungi from these sites may be restricted.
