Helicobacter pylori Antigen, Fecal by EIA
Also known as: PYLORI AG
Use
This test is used as an alternative to the H. pylori urea breath test for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection. It detects the presence of Helicobacter pylori antigens in stool samples, which is an indicator of active infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Proper diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infection are crucial for preventing complications such as peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.
Special Instructions
To avoid false negative results, patients should not take antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or bismuth preparations for 14 days prior to specimen collection. The test requires stool samples and uses an unpreserved stool transport vial provided by ARUP. These vials can be ordered through ARUP Connect or by contacting ARUP Client Services.
Limitations
This test has a limitation where gastric specimens, swabs, or tissue samples are unacceptable. Specimens in media or preservatives are also unacceptable. False negatives may occur if the patient has recently taken certain medications such as antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or bismuth preparations.
