Hemoglobin Evaluation Reflexive Cascade
Also known as: HB CASCADE
Use
The Hemoglobin Evaluation Reflexive Cascade is an optimal test for the initial and confirmatory diagnosis of any suspected hemoglobinopathy. Each stage of testing is directed and interpreted by a faculty hematopathologist, ensuring comprehensive evaluation. It should not be used for follow-up of an individual with a known diagnosis.
Special Instructions
Ensure submission of a recent CBC and a completed Patient History Form for Hemoglobinopathy/Thalassemia Testing to accompany the sample for proper interpretation.
Limitations
The test is not New York state approved. Quantitation of hemoglobin by HPLC or electrophoresis is most definitive in individuals over one year of age, and repeat testing is recommended if done earlier. Abnormal hemoglobin variants might require additional testing, which can increase the turnaround time up to 21 days.
