Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility With Reflex to Hemoglobinopathy Fractionation Cascade, Blood
Also known as: Hb Solubility, Sickle Cell Preparation, Sickle Cell Solubility Test, Sickle Cell Test, Sickle Prep
Use
Qualitative determination of presence of hemoglobin S; detect sickling hemoglobins; evaluate hemolytic anemia, undiagnosed hereditary anemia with morphologic (sickle-like) abnormalities on peripheral blood smear
Special Instructions
This test automatically reflexes to hemoglobin fractionation by HPLC if positive, which incurs additional charges. Ensure a separate lavender-top tube is submitted for each test requiring this specimen type to avoid delays in turnaround time.
Limitations
The limitations are provided in the related test, Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility [005223], which should be consulted for detailed constraints. This test may not detect all variants of sickle cell hemoglobin or other non-hemoglobin S pathologies without further fractionation.
