Lactoferrin, Fecal by ELISA
Also known as: FECLACTO
Use
The Lactoferrin, Fecal by ELISA test is primarily used to screen for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) versus irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A positive result indicates the presence of lactoferrin, which serves as a marker for fecal leukocytes, signifying inflammation in the intestines. Conversely, a negative result does not exclude intestinal inflammation, but the presence of lactoferrin strongly supports an inflammatory process indicative of IBD.
Special Instructions
This test requires the transfer of stool to an unpreserved stool transport vial or placement in enteric transport media like Cary-Blair for submission. Ensure to order the appropriate vials through ARUP's eSupply or their Client Services. It's essential to follow the specified specimen preparation and storage instructions to maintain specimen integrity.
Limitations
The test results should be interpreted in the context of the clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. A positive result indicates inflammation but is not specific to IBD, as other gastrointestinal conditions may result in a similar elevation of fecal lactoferrin. Negative results do not conclusively rule out intestinal inflammation and may occur despite the presence of mild inflammatory processes. Therefore, the Lactoferrin, Fecal by ELISA should not be the sole diagnostic tool for determining the presence of IBD.
