Manganese, Serum
Also known as: MANG
Use
This test may be useful as a reasonable indicator of recent, active manganese exposure, providing a modest distinction between exposed and nonexposed individuals. It is not recommended for assessing manganese body stores. An alternative test, Manganese, Whole Blood, is recommended for monitoring potential manganese accumulation, especially in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
Special Instructions
Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements can introduce interfering substances. Patients should be advised to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and non-essential over-the-counter medications, upon the advice of their physician.
Limitations
Elevated results may be due to skin or collection-related contamination, including the use of noncertified metal-free collection/transport tubes. If contamination concerns exist due to elevated serum manganese levels, confirmation with a second specimen collected in a certified metal-free tube is recommended. Less than 5 percent of manganese in circulation is present in the serum, which may limit the test's accuracy for certain assessments.
