Microsporidia Stain by Modified Trichrome
Also known as: MICROST
Use
The Microsporidia Stain by Modified Trichrome test is used for the detection of microsporidia in stool specimens, particularly to confirm suspicions of infection when PCR results are negative but clinical suspicion remains high. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that can cause diarrheal diseases, primarily in immunocompromised individuals. Accurate detection is essential for appropriate treatment planning and monitoring of infections.
Special Instructions
For optimal results, it is recommended to collect three separate stool specimens within a 5-7-day period with individual orders submitted for each specimen. Ensure specimens are preserved within one hour of collection using either AlcorFix or 10 percent formalin. ARUP provides AlcorFix through eSupply accessible via ARUP Connect.
Limitations
A single negative result does not rule out the possibility of a Microsporidia infection as there are limitations in sensitivity. Therefore, repeated testing or alternative methods like PCR might be necessary for comprehensive evaluation.
