Mycoplasma hominis Culture, Urogenital Source
Also known as: MC MYCO
Use
The Mycoplasma hominis Culture test is used to identify Mycoplasma hominis in urogenital specimens. This bacterium is associated with various genitourinary tract infections. Identifying its presence can help diagnose conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and postpartum fever, among others. Culturing the organism from urogenital specimens aids in determining the appropriate treatment strategy for the affected individual.
Special Instructions
The specimen must be collected from a cervical, urethral, or vaginal swab, semen, or urine. It should be placed in Mycoplasma transport media such as UTM (ARUP supply #12884) or any validated media for Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma transport. Specimens should be placed in a sealed bag for transport. Specimen source information is required to process the test.
Limitations
This test is limited to detecting viable Mycoplasma hominis in urogenital specimens. It is not suitable for assessing contamination in cell lines or tissue cultures and cannot be used for non-urogenital sources. Samples not placed in appropriate Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma transport media or stored incorrectly may yield inaccurate results. The test is not designed for environmental culturing.
