Rifampin and Metabolite, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: RIFAMP SP
Use
The Rifampin and Metabolite test is used for optimizing drug therapy and monitoring patient adherence. It is essential in therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to ensure that patients receive the appropriate dosage that maximizes efficacy while minimizing toxicity. Accurate measurement of rifampin and its metabolite levels in serum or plasma helps in adjusting the drug regimen for improved treatment outcomes. Monitoring these levels is particularly crucial for patients undergoing long-term therapy to avoid potential drug interactions and adverse effects.
Special Instructions
The test is not performed at ARUP Labs, and separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Specimens should be transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube as soon as possible, or within two hours of collection, to maintain sample integrity. Ensure specimens are not transported in separator tubes to avoid rejection.
Limitations
The test's accuracy can be affected if specimens are transported in separator tubes, which are considered unacceptable. Specimen stability is 72 hours at ambient temperature, one month refrigerated, and one month frozen, which needs to be adhered to during transport and storage. It is also crucial to separate specimens from cells as soon as possible post-collection to avoid deterioration of the sample quality.
