Special Stain, Acid Fast
Also known as: AFB SS
Use
The Special Stain, Acid Fast test is used primarily in the detection and identification of acid-fast bacilli, such as Mycobacterium species, in tissue or cell specimens. Acid-fast staining is a critical diagnostic tool in identifying infections caused by mycobacteria, including tuberculosis and leprosy. This test assists clinicians in determining the presence of these organisms and can guide appropriate treatment options.
Special Instructions
Specimen must be formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded. Order with ARUP Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (#32960) if electronic ordering is unavailable. Standalone service, not a full diagnostic workup.
Limitations
The Acid Fast stain may not detect non-representative tissue samples. Depleted specimens are also unsuitable for testing and can lead to inconclusive results. The sensitivity of this test depends highly on the quality and type of tissue submitted. Results should be correlated with clinical and other laboratory findings.
