Special Stain, Fite
Also known as: FITE SS
Use
This test is a histochemical special stain (Fite stain) used for identifying acid-fast organisms such as Mycobacterium leprae or other acid-fast bacilli in formalin-fixed, paraffin‑embedded tissue or cellblock preparations. It is provided as a technical 'stain and return' service, primarily to assist pathologists in detecting acid-fast organisms in tissue specimens.
Special Instructions
Ordering is recommended via electronic request or using ARUP Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (#32960) if electronic ordering capability is unavailable. Refer to ARUP’s listing of histochemical stains for ordering recommendations. The test is performed Monday through Friday, and stained slides or tissue blocks must be submitted in ARUP tissue transport kit #47808. Slides or block should be protected from excessive heat. Alias names include “Fite‑faraco staining” and “Fite staining.”
Limitations
Only a stain and return technical service; no interpretive or diagnostic reading is provided by ARUP. Unacceptable specimens include nonrepresentative tissue or depleted specimens. Frozen specimens are unacceptable. Stability is indefinite at ambient or refrigerated temperatures.
