Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Metabolite, Meconium, Qualitative
Also known as: CONFTHC M
Use
This test is used to detect and document fetal exposure to carboxy-THC during approximately the last trimester of a full-term pregnancy. It identifies a common metabolite of THC, which can be present in cannabis products. The test can help in understanding potential exposure but does not determine the pattern or frequency of maternal drug use. It is important to note that detection does not insinuate impairment and may not affect infant outcomes.
Special Instructions
All available meconium should be collected and transported to the appropriate container for testing. The specimen can be stored at room temperature for collection and transport. ARUP provides a Security Kit for Meconium/Umbilical Drug Detection which can be obtained online through ARUP Connect or by contacting ARUP Client Services.
Limitations
This test does not distinguish between the delta-8 and delta-9 forms of THC or their metabolites. A negative result does not exclude the possibility of drug use during pregnancy. The test does not provide information on the frequency or pattern of maternal drug use. Detection of THC in meconium depends on various factors including drug stability, deposition characteristics, and the analytical method. Drugs administered to the mother during labor or directly to the infant can also be detected.
