Triglycerides, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: TRG
Use
The Triglycerides, Serum or Plasma test is used to assess cardiovascular disease risk and guide therapy. It provides important information on lipid levels, which are crucial in determining the risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Normal fasting serum triglycerides concentration in adults should be 149 mg/dL or less, borderline-high is 150 to 199 mg/dL, high is 200 to 499 mg/dL, and very high is 500 mg/dL or greater. Accurate measurement is essential for the effective management and treatment of patients at risk of cardiovascular events.
Special Instructions
Patient should preferably provide a fasting specimen for accurate assessment. Blood should be collected in a plasma separator tube or serum separator tube. After collection, the specimen should be allowed to clot completely at room temperature and separated from cells as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours.
Limitations
Interference may occur with high concentrations of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and NAPQI, an acetaminophen metabolite, which can produce negative interference at or above concentrations expected during an acetaminophen overdose. Specimens with glycerol-lubricated stoppers or body fluid (other than serum or plasma) are not acceptable for this test.
