Tropheryma whipplei PCR
Also known as: TWHIPPCR
Use
Tropheryma whipplei PCR is designed to aid in the diagnosis of Whipple disease, particularly in cases where other diagnostic methods are inconclusive or yield suspicious results. It is utilized as part of a comprehensive diagnostic approach to confirm the presence of Tropheryma whipplei, the bacterium responsible for the disease. The test is significant in clinical settings for providing clarity in complex diagnostic circumstances, facilitating appropriate patient management and treatment strategies.
Special Instructions
The test requires a sterile collection of the specimen, such as serum, plasma, whole blood, or cerebrospinal fluid, in appropriate containers like EDTA or serum separator tubes. It is imperative to freeze tissue samples immediately and indicate the specimen source on submission to comply with testing requirements.
Limitations
While the Tropheryma whipplei PCR test is highly specific for detecting the presence of the bacterium, it does not exclude the possibility of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen, which could lead to false-negative results. Additionally, the test may not detect nucleic acid concentrations below its level of detection. It is not FDA-approved but is a Laboratory Developed Test performed in a CLIA-certified lab, meant solely for clinical use. The results should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory data for accurate diagnosis.
