Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP), Whole Blood Industrial
Also known as: ZPP IND
Use
Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP) testing in whole blood is used as an OSHA-mandated indicator to assess lead exposure in the industrial setting. Elevated ZPP results can be indicative of lead poisoning or other conditions such as early and late iron deficiency, anemia of chronic disease, and erythropoietic protoporphyria. The test results help in occupational exposure assessment, where OSHA requires ZPP whole blood concentration to be reported in specific units. This information is critical for ensuring workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
Special Instructions
The test is performed on the ProtoFluor Z system manufactured by Helena Laboratories, and the result is not comparable to results obtained from extraction-based methods or from the AVIV ZPP system. The assay is intended for clinical purposes and was developed by ARUP Laboratories but has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. FDA. New York state approval is in place for this test.
Limitations
Elevated bilirubin or riboflavin, as well as hemolyzed, clotted or improperly aliquoted specimens, may falsely increase the ZPP concentration. The test is specifically designed to measure ZPP in whole blood and assumes a hematocrit of 45% when converting ZPP to units of ug/dL for adults. The performance characteristics of this test determined by ARUP have not been compared to results from extraction-based methods or the AVIV ZPP system.
