Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP), Workplace
Also known as: Workplace ZPP, ZPP
Use
Monitor chronic industrial exposure to lead
Special Instructions
This test is specifically designed for workplace monitoring of lead exposure. It is important to note that levels above the environmental exposure range are not always indicative of lead poisoning. For workplace exposure to lead, environmental and biological exposure indices (BEI) references will be listed on the report.
Limitations
There are certain limitations associated with the ZPP test. Fluorescent substances in plasma may interfere with the hematofluorometer results, while skin contamination may lead to false elevations. Both this test and blood lead are needed for a full evaluation. The ZPP test should not be used as a screening tool for lead poisoning in children due to decreased sensitivity in younger populations. Additionally, environmental exposure and symptoms should be considered in the diagnosis.
