Bacterial Vaginosis, Sialidase Activity
Also known as: BV (Sialidase) Activity, Vaginitis, Vaginosis
Use
Enzyme activity test for use in the detection of vaginal fluid specimens for sialidase activity, an enzyme produced by bacteria associated with bacterial vaginitis, including Bacteroides spp, Prevotella spp, and Mobiluncus spp and some G vaginalis. In a recent study, Bradshaw et al demonstrated the test to be 88% sensitive and 95% specific.
Special Instructions
Collecting specimens from the cervix should be avoided to reduce risk for obstetric patients and because cervical sialidase activity is typically higher than in vaginal samples. Specimens should not be collected from patients who have used vaginal creams, ointments, douches, spermicides, vaginal lubricants, or feminine sprays within 72 hours prior to testing. Immediate placement of the swabs into the transport tube is essential after sample collection.
Limitations
The test may give false-negative results if the specimen is insufficient or taken from patients undergoing antimicrobial therapy. Collecting specimens from inappropriate locations such as the cervix, or after the use of vaginal products, can also compromise the accuracy of the test results.
