C-Peptide, Five Specimens
Use
The C-Peptide, Five Specimens test is used to evaluate beta cell function by measuring the levels of C-peptide over multiple time points. It is often ordered as part of a series of tests to monitor insulin production and activity, especially in patients undergoing diagnostic treatment protocols where modifications are made following the initial baseline specimen collection. It provides insight into the patient's insulin secretory capacity which can help in the assessment of different forms of diabetes and monitoring of therapeutic interventions.
Special Instructions
This is a panel test that requires multiple blood specimens to be drawn at different time points. The initial sample is collected, a drug or treatment is administered, and subsequent samples are collected. Do not use this panel if no treatment is administered after the first sample. Discuss with the clinician to confirm the necessity of the series for accurate diagnosis. Patients should stop taking biotin supplements at least 72 hours before specimen collection due to potential interference with test results.
Limitations
The test results can be influenced by extrinsic factors such as intake of high-dose biotin supplements, which may lead to assay interference. Caution is advised for patients who are on biotin supplementation, and the test is not recommended unless 72 hours have passed since the last intake. Additionally, the reference intervals provided are for fasting patients; thus, non-fasting samples may not align with the expected reference data. It may not establish new baselines for non-standard sample collection protocols or unanticipated treatment interactions.
