Cortisol, Three Specimens
Use
This test measures cortisol levels through three separate serum specimens. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is commonly measured to diagnose adrenal gland disorders, particularly Cushing syndrome and Addison's disease. Sequential sampling is used to observe the pattern of cortisol secretion throughout the day, helping in evaluating diurnal rhythm and assessing adrenal function.
Special Instructions
Patients should discontinue biotin supplementation at least 72 hours before the collection due to potential interference with the test results. It is important to follow the specified directions for sequential sampling.
Limitations
This test may have interference from various supplements, especially if the patient is taking biotin. Additionally, cortisol levels can be influenced by factors such as stress, infection, and hormonal therapies, which should be considered when interpreting results.
