Creatine Kinase (CK), MB
Also known as: CK-2, CK-MB
Use
Confirm and monitor therapy after acute myocardial infarction
Special Instructions
Biotin (vitamin B7, B8) supplementation can interfere with the test results. Patients should refrain from biotin consumption for at least 72 hours before sample collection. It is recommended to ask all patients indicated for this test about biotin use.
Limitations
CK-MB levels might reflect skeletal muscle injury rather than myocardial damage. Surprisingly low baseline levels might be found in the elderly. Random single CK-MB measurements cannot definitively confirm or rule out AMI; serial measurements over time are advised in the emergency room setting and during treatment.
