Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Culture
Also known as: CMV Culture, Culture, Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Use
Aid in the diagnosis of disease caused by CMV (eg, viral infections, pneumonia, and organ transplant-related disease)
Special Instructions
If reflex testing is performed, additional charges/CPT codes may apply. It is important to submit one specimen per test requested, specifying the exact specimen source or origin, such as a genital lesion. The specific test number must be indicated on the test request form. Always check the expiration date of the transport medium and ensure to use non-expired devices.
Limitations
This culture is specific for the isolation of Cytomegalovirus and will not routinely detect other viral agents. If a virus other than CMV is recovered, identification will be made, and an additional charge will apply. Additional time may be required for confirmatory or reflex tests. Virology procedures' CPT coding often cannot be determined before the culture is performed. Specimens received in inappropriate conditions, such as those frozen, sent in expired transport media, or after prolonged transport delay, may be rejected.
