Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Sulfate
Also known as: DHEA-SO4
Use
Work up women with infertility, amenorrhea, or hirsutism to identify the source of excessive androgen; aid in the evaluation of androgen excess (hirsutism and/or virilization), including Stein-Leventhal syndrome and adrenocortical diseases, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal tumor. DHEA-S is not increased with hypopituitarism. It is low in Addison disease.
Special Instructions
This test may show interference if samples are collected from individuals consuming high doses of biotin supplements. Patients should be advised to discontinue biotin intake at least 72 hours before sample collection to avoid potential interference.
Limitations
Monoclonal mouse antibodies and extremely high titers of antibodies to streptavidin and ruthenium can cause erroneous results. Despite additives included to minimize these effects, rare cases of interference might occur, so caution is advised especially in patients treated with monoclonal mouse antibodies.
