Enterohemorrhagic E coli (EHEC) Shiga Toxin, EIA
Also known as: E coli O157, EHEC, Stool Culture, Shiga Toxin
Use
Detect the presence of Shiga-toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic E coli
Special Instructions
For collection, a stool sample or a rectal swab should be placed in a stool culture transport vial like Para-Pak® orange. The specimen must be stored at room temperature and should not be frozen or overfilled in the transport media.
Limitations
This test specifically detects enterohemorrhagic E coli, particularly O157:H7 strains known for producing Shiga toxins. It does not detect other types of pathogenic E coli, such as enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enteropathogenic (EPEC), or enteroinvasive (EIEC). As a result, the test is not comprehensive for all forms of diarrheagenic E coli infections. A negative result does not rule out an E coli infection not related to Shiga toxin-producing strains, or other bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections causing similar symptoms.
