Also known as: Adrenals, Breast, Liver, Lung, Lymph Node
Use
Diagnose primary or metastatic malignant neoplasms; differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant processes
Special Instructions
Ensure that the patient's name, date of birth, sex, Social Security number, previous malignancy, drug therapy, radiation therapy, and all other pertinent clinical information, including history of alcohol abuse, are included on the request form. Laboratory personnel must be present for needle aspiration procedures under radiologic guidance if initial interpretation of specimen quality is desired. Call the cytology department manager for time arrangement; a 24-hour notification is preferred.
Limitations
Technical limitations include improper labeling, improper fixation, air-drying artifacts, specimens submitted in expired vials according to manufacturer's label, and frozen specimens. Additionally, the adequacy of the sample is crucial, and it relies on proper technique and immediate post-collection processing. The methodology must be followed precisely to ensure accurate results.
