Hirsutism Test Group I (Endocrine Sciences)
Use
The Hirsutism Test Group I is used to evaluate patients with hirsutism, a condition characterized by excessive hair growth in women in areas where men typically grow hair, such as the face, chest, and back. This test helps in assessing the levels of androgens, which may be elevated in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal hyperplasia, or androgen-secreting tumors. Measurement of these hormone levels provides insight into the potential etiologies of hirsutism and guides appropriate clinical management.
Special Instructions
Serum must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture to prevent degradation of the analytes. Separate frozen specimens should be submitted for multiple tests to prevent delays. Proper handling and storage are crucial for maintaining specimen integrity and ensuring accurate test results.
Limitations
This test does not identify the cause of hirsutism and should be used in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. The levels of hormones measured may be affected by medications, illness, or patient preparation. Additionally, biological variability can affect results, and repeat testing may be necessary to confirm findings.
