Inhibin B
Use
This test is used to assess the function of the antral follicles of the ovaries in women or the Sertoli cells of the testes in men. It serves as an adjunct to follicle-stimulating hormone testing during infertility evaluation.
Special Instructions
This test may exhibit interference when the sample is collected from a person consuming a supplement with high doses of biotin. It is recommended to ask patients indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to sample collection.
Limitations
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Labcorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Values obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably. Inhibin values fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, and serum levels should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of malignant disease. Interpretation should be in conjunction with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. Most studies of inhibin B as an ovarian cancer marker are limited to postmenopausal women where levels are normally low. Interpretations in premenopausal women can be difficult due to variations with the menstrual cycle.
