Insulin, Five Specimens
Use
The Insulin, Five Specimens test is used for dynamic testing to evaluate insulin levels across multiple time points following an initial baseline measurement. This panel involves collecting an initial specimen and then administering a treatment, such as glucola or a pharmaceutical agent, followed by additional specimen collections at specified intervals to assess the body’s insulin response.
Special Instructions
This test requires careful coordination as multiple specimens must be drawn at different times. Refer to the Endocrine Appendix for collection instructions. Ensure patients stop consuming biotin supplements at least 72 hours before collection to prevent interference.
Limitations
The results may be affected if the patient does not adhere to the proper collection schedule or in cases where biotin interference is not avoided. This test assumes the patient undergoes a specified treatment between specimen collections. If no treatment occurs, the test should not be ordered, as it may yield inconclusive results.
