α-Lactalbumin
Also known as: Alpha Lactalbumin
Use
The α-Lactalbumin test is used to determine the presence and concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum, which are associated with allergic reactions to lactalbumin, a protein found in milk. This test helps in the diagnosis and management of milk allergies, guiding dietary and therapeutic interventions for individuals with allergic symptoms.
Special Instructions
The sample can be collected in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube, with a required volume of 0.2 mL serum. The specimen stability is maintained for 14 days at room temperature or refrigerated, and for 3 months when frozen with up to 3 freeze/thaw cycles.
Limitations
This test is specifically designed to detect IgE-mediated allergies and does not assess for non-IgE-mediated reactions or intolerances. False negatives may occur if the patient has low total IgE or is under certain allergy medications. Cross-reactivity between different allergens can potentially influence the specificity of IgE detection.
