Methylmalonic Acid, Serum or Plasma
Use
Serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) measurement is used to evaluate individuals with signs and symptoms associated with vitamin B12 deficiency1-7 or congenital methylmalonic academia.8,9
Special Instructions
MMA concentrations are often elevated in early stages of vitamin B12 deficiency while serum levels remain normal. Follow-up measurement can help assess vitamin B12 supplementation effectiveness.
Limitations
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Labcorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Plasma from a light blue-top or yellow-top tube is unsuitable as citrate interferes with the assay.
