Protein Electrophoresis With Interpretation, Serum With Reflex to IFE, Serum
Also known as: Interpretation, Protein Electrophoresis With Reflex to IFE, Serum
Use
Evaluate disease categories as acute or chronic inflammation, liver disorder, hypogammaglobulinemia, possible monoclonal gammopathies
Special Instructions
The test involves a two-step process where the initial electrophoresis could reflex to immunofixation (IFE) at an additional charge if an M-spike is detected. Testing schedules may vary, and additional time may be required for confirmatory reflex tests.
Limitations
The test primarily assesses the protein composition in serum and may not detect all protein abnormalities. It may not provide complete information about the cause of the detected protein abnormalities, necessitating further clinical evaluation. Hemolysis or using plasma instead of serum could lead to rejection of the specimen.
Methodology
Immunoassay (Electrophoresis followed by immunodiffusion against monospecific antisera to immunoglobulin and i...)
