Protein Electrophoresis, with Total Protein and Reflex to IFE, Serum (10269)
Also known as: Electrophoresis, IFE, SPE with Reflex IFE, SPEP
Use
This assay performs serum protein electrophoresis to quantify total protein and detect abnormal protein banding; if abnormal bands are detected, immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is reflexively performed to characterize monoclonal or abnormal proteins, aiding in the evaluation of disorders such as multiple myeloma, immunoglobulinopathies, and other dysproteinemias.
Special Instructions
Reflex immunofixation is performed only if abnormal banding is detected. Overnight fasting is preferred for specimen collection.
Limitations
Grossly hemolyzed, lipemic, icteric specimens, or plasma (rather than serum), are rejected. Interpretation may be limited in low‑volume or inadequate samples. Reflex testing incurs additional charges.
