Trichophyton rubrum
Use
The Trichophyton rubrum test determines the presence of specific IgE antibodies to the fungus Trichophyton rubrum, which is known to cause dermatophytosis (fungal infections of the skin). This test aids in diagnosing allergic responses related to exposure to this fungus, which can contribute to conditions such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm.
Special Instructions
Ensure the collection of 1 mL of serum in either an 8.5 mL red-top tube or an 8.5 mL gel-barrier tube. The specimen should be stored at room temperature but can also be refrigerated for up to 14 days or frozen for up to 3 months if stability is required.
Limitations
This test is limited to identifying specific IgE antibodies to Trichophyton rubrum. It does not measure total IgE levels or diagnose non-IgE-mediated reactions. Variability in results may be affected by sample handling, such as improper storage temperatures and excessive freeze/thaw cycles.
