Albumin, 24‑Hour Urine without Creatinine
Also known as: Albumin, 24-Hour Urine
Use
Albumin excreted in the urine (microalbumin) is a sensitive marker of nephropathy and is used to screen for early renal disease, particularly in diabetic patients.
Special Instructions
The 24‑hour urine collection should start after the first‑morning void and include all subsequent voids through the first void of the next morning. The urine should be refrigerated during and after collection. Patients should avoid exercise for 24 hours before collection, as activity may elevate urinary albumin excretion.
Limitations
Urinary tract infections, menstrual bleeding, fever, congestive heart failure, marked hyperglycemia, and marked hypertension may elevate urinary albumin excretion and affect test results.
