Cholesterol, Total
Use
Total cholesterol measurement is used to assess cardiovascular disease risk. Elevated total cholesterol is associated with buildup of fatty deposits in arteries, increasing risk for heart disease and stroke. This test quantifies the sum of LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol) levels and may be used for screening, monitoring existing conditions, or evaluating effects of therapy.
Special Instructions
Fasting for 8β12 hours is recommended. Sample must be collected via blood draw at a Quest Diagnostics patient service center or via Quest Mobile where available.
Limitations
This test reports only total cholesterol and does not provide separate LDL or HDL values. It may not be appropriate for patients under 13 or not meeting eligibility criteria for consumer-initiated testing.
