Epstein‑Barr Virus Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) Antibody (IgM)
Also known as: EBV Current Infection, VCA IgM, EBV Capsid Antibody IgM, EBV VCA IgM
Use
This serological assay detects IgM antibodies to Epstein‑Barr Virus (EBV) Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA), indicating recent or acute infection consistent with primary EBV infection (infectious mononucleosis). IgM to VCA appears early in the course of infection and typically declines within a few months thereafter (e.g. 2–3 months).
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
IgM antibody responses may be absent or diminished in immunocompromised individuals. The presence of VCA IgM alone may not distinguish between primary infection and reactivation in some clinical contexts; results should be interpreted in conjunction with other EBV serologies (e.g. EBNA, EA) and clinical findings.
