Quantification of methylmalonic acid (MMA) in urine, normalized to creatinine, is used primarily to detect and monitor methylmalonic aciduria and functional vitamin B₁₂ (cobalamin) deficiency states, since methylmalonate accumulates when cobalamin is deficient.
