RPR (Diagnosis) with Reflex to Titer and Treponema pallidum Antibody, IA
Also known as: Syphilis Serology Screen, PR(Dx) rfl Ttr/T.pallidum, Blood Premarital RPR, Automated Reagin Test, ART
Use
This is a nontreponemal screening test for syphilis (Rapid Plasma Reagin, RPR). It is used for diagnosis; false-positive results may occur due to conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, leprosy, brucellosis, atypical pneumonia, typhus, yaws, pinta, pregnancy, Gaucher disease, old age, or malignancy. Monitoring RPR titers is helpful to assess therapy effectiveness.
Special Instructions
If the initial RPR screen is reactive, then reflex testing is performed automatically: an RPR Titer plus a chemiluminescence Treponema pallidum antibody immunoassay for confirmatory testing will be performed at an additional charge.
Limitations
False-positive RPR results can be associated with infections, pregnancy, autoimmune disease, old age, Gaucher disease, and malignancy. Additionally, false-positive results may reflect other infections (e.g., leprosy, brucellosis, atypical pneumonia, typhus, yaws) or biologic conditions.
